Arts & Literacy Institute, Burlington VT
In August 2016, I was part of the presenting team for the Arts & Literacy Institute in Burlington, VT. Over 30 educators from across the region attended the beautiful and powerful learning laboratory, which was hosted by the Flynn Theater and took place at the Bishop Booth Conference Center on the shores of Lake Champlain. Some of the visual arts experiences from the 3-day institute are featured below
- On day 1, educators explored the power of words
- We experiemented with working in monochrome
- Participants used a variety of mark-making techniques
- Artworks were turned into paper boats
- Using the voice as a vessel
- Paper boats were lit from the inside
- Scene from the final presentation
- On day 2, participants created collages using hand-made paper and personal textiles
- We brought in and shared personal items of clothing and fabric scraps
- Using collage to tell a story
- Powerful and moving stories were shared with the group
- Visual narratives formed the backdrop for the final presentation
