I am inspired by the brilliance of the natural world and utilize elements from the environment to create site-specific installations and indoor sculptures.
After a lengthy process of collecting, classifying and processing, I combine these components with materials that are paradoxical in nature for example, pine needles with steel. Although both are derived from nature, there is a strong disconnect between the two, both in substance and process.
As the work is often time-based, it falls victim to its own nature, falling into decay as its very construction is taking place. This becomes part of its process – the unstoppable progression through cycles of decay and creation.
The work itself has several underlying themes; man’s complex relationship with the natural world, our reliance and dependence upon it for our day to day living, for construction and for industry. It talks about our constant adaptation to the changing world around us and the fundamental connectivity that exists between all living things.
